About Built On The Rock Built On The Rock is a FIRST Lego League team made up of eight friends from Independence and Vernon Townships in New Jersey. We’re all home educated, and members of the Sussex County Christian Home Schoolers group. The seeds of our team were first planted about 5 years ago when Jonathan Daudelin, then 10 years old, had finally scrimped and saved up enough money to buy his first Robotics Invention System. What a great purchase! He didn’t know anyone else who had one, so he figured it all out himself. He loved building and programming all sorts of things. It looked pretty exciting to his friend, Chase Billing, so he got one too. It wasn’t too long before Jonathan found out that he needed two RCX’s to build some of the things he wanted, like an “automatic lemonade maker,” and later, a working ATM machine with an optical card scanner. Meanwhile, his older brother David had been spending a lot of time learning how to program games, and started an amateur software company with Chase (Trek Software). Finally, David broke down and got a Robotics Invention System of his own. Eventually, they heard about FLL, and it seemed like a dream to be able to compete in it some day. Mrs. Vickey Daudelin, David and Jonathan’s mother, couldn’t bear the thought of them never having the chance to work out their passion for robot design and programming in a contest like that. So, in 2005-2006, the last year David was eligible to compete, she decided she’d be our coach and figure out how to make it a reality for us. She handles all the administrative stuff, hosts our meetings every Friday afternoon, and provides refreshments with some other moms. When it comes to doing the work, we’ve always been team-led. Our meetings begin with prayer, followed by a team brainstorming session. In the session, the week’s progress is reviewed and the schedule for the rest of the meeting is discussed. After the meeting, we often play soccer. We picked the name “Built On The Rock,” because it’s our goal to please God in everything we do, and we wanted a name that reflects that. In Matthew 7:24, Jesus said that those who hear his words and do them are like those who build their house on the rock. |
